Huawei equipment release by U.S. reveals "illegal, arbitrary" nature: FM spokesperson

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States has recently released to Huawei the telecommunications equipment it wantonly seized two years ago, which in itself reveals the "illegal and arbitrary" nature of its misconduct, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tuesday.

Huawei recently dropped a lawsuit filed in June against U.S. government agencies after Washington released the equipment it had seized for two years.

"China firmly opposes the United States for making false charges against Chinese companies and for misusing its national power to oppress them," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing.

"Such practice is disgraceful and immoral, and it runs counter to the principle of market economy, for which the United States has been a self-claimed champion," Hua said. "It will severely undermine the reputation and credibility of the United States, as well as the confidence of other countries in cooperating with it."

She said that Microsoft's president said in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek that the U.S. government should not take restrictive measures against Huawei when there is no sound basis in fact, logic and the rule of law.

"We urge the U.S. side to heed people's rational calls, stop abusing the concept of national security and oppressing certain Chinese companies, and provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies operating in the United States," she said.
