HONG KONG, Aug. 24 -- A youth association in Hong Kong called on young people to uphold the spirit of law and oppose violence on Saturday.
The Hong Kong CPPCC (Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference) Youth Association convened a seminar on Saturday to oppose violence, guard Hong Kong, and seek viable solutions to the current issues.
"Violence is not the solution to problems. If the chaotic situation is allowed to continue, a deadlock will be formed. The most urgent issue now is to tackle the current predicament," said Tam Chun Kwok, chairman of the association.
"We condemn any violent behaviors, and hope that all walks of life in Hong Kong will show solidarity, uphold the spirit of law, engage in peaceful and reasonable communication to solve the problems," he said.
Elaine Shiu, a 26-year-old jewelry designer in Hong Kong who attended the seminar, said extreme means used by some young people have exacted heavy toll on the society and its economy, and directly impacted people's jobs and lives.
"Many businesses are losing money, and some have to tell staff to take leaves to cut costs. I'm about to open a jewelry shop in Central in September, and now I'm very worried that business is going to be very bad," she said.
Chan Yung, vice-chairperson of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, attended the seminar and called on young people to protect themselves, guard Hong Kong and protect their friends.
"Young people have to take up the tasks to spread the message of peace, reasonable thinking, and non-violence," he told attendees.
