China to build more high-throughput computing data centers

(Xinhua)    09:27, August 02, 2019

BEIJING, Aug. 1 -- China will build high-throughput computing data centers in more than 10 cities and form a high-speed network to improve the country's data processing ability, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said Thursday.

The first data center has been completed and put into use in the city of Yancheng, eastern China's Jiangsu Province, according to the Institute of Computing Technology under the CAS.

The center has 1,000 compute and storage nodes and 30,000 processor cores. It can efficiently process 10 million video streams per second but consume only 750 kilowatts of power.

High-throughput computing enables the use of many computing resources over long periods of time to accomplish a computational task. With high-throughput computing, what could have taken weeks before on one computer will take only a few hours on the company's cluster.

A report predicted a tenfold increase in global data volumes from 2016 to 2025. High-throughput computing, with strong data processing ability, can support hundreds of billions of new terminals and massive information processing, said Sun Ninghui, director of the institute.
