Chinese envoy voices concern over humanitarian situation in Syria

UNITED NATIONS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Tuesday expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Syria.

"China is concerned about the humanitarian situation on the ground, and supports the efforts of the United Nations and relevant parties to improve the humanitarian situation there," Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, told the Security Council.

At present, the humanitarian situation in Idlib governorate has attracted attention from the international community, and the Security Council has met many times on this matter, he said. "We hope that our discussions will help council members deepen communication and understand all aspects of the situation on the ground."

China supports Russia and Turkey in continuing to implement a cease-fire agreement, promoting the de-escalation of the conflict in Idlib, and calls on the international community to unify counterterrorism standards and fight terrorist groups, he said.

Given the current situation, all parties should seek a comprehensive and long-term solution to tackling terrorism and addressing the humanitarian issues in the northwestern part of Syria, he said.

The United Nations and other parties should scale up humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the northwest, he said.

Wu also voiced concern over the humanitarian problems in other parts of Syria and in IDP camps.

Humanitarian operations in Syria should fully respect Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, strictly follow Security Council resolutions and the principles governing UN humanitarian relief and relevant international law. Communications and coordination with the Syrian government should be strengthened, he said.

In areas where the security situation is relatively stable, the international community should support the Syrian government in de-mining, rebuilding infrastructure, restoring health care, education, and social services, launching industrial projects, promoting development, and improving people's livelihood so that more and more Syrians will step out of the shadow of war and gradually live a stable and orderly life, said Wu.
