China calls on upcoming G20 summit to support multilateralism

(Xinhua)    08:24, June 26, 2019

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China hoped that the upcoming G20 summit in Osaka, Japan would send a strong signal of supporting multilateralism and opposing unilateralism, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Tuesday.

According to media reports, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) issued reports respectively on Monday, expressing concerns over the current global economic outlook. The reports said the restrictive measures imposed by the G20 members as well as the trade tensions among them would fuel the uncertainty of world economic growth.

In response, spokesperson Geng Shuang said instability and uncertainty in the global economy were mainly due to trade tensions that arose from unilateralism, protectionism and bullying practices.

Geng said China always advocates free trade and safeguards the rule-based multilateral trading system. "China, as one of the victims of multiple trade restrictions, always stands in the front line of opposing unilateralism, protectionism and bullying practices."

China stood ready to seek consensus and solutions with G20 members at the summit in Osaka on promoting global trade growth, advancing world economic development, improving global governance and coping with risks and challenges, Geng said.

"China hopes the summit in Osaka will send a strong signal of supporting multilateralism and opposing unilateralism, supporting openness, inclusiveness and opposing protectionism, supporting win-win cooperation and opposing bullying," he said.
