Mainland's resolution to safeguard sovereignty not to be underestimated: cross-Strait forum attendants

NANCHANG, June 3 (Xinhua) -- No individual or element should underestimate the Chinese mainland's resolution and capability of safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, attendants at a cross-Strait forum said Monday.

The attendants shared their take on Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe's remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue on Sunday, when he warned against any attempt to separate the island of Taiwan from the country.

"Protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the responsibility of all Chinese, including Taiwan compatriots," said Lin Shangyuan, head of the Alumni Association of the Huangpu Military Academy.

Seeing more and more Taiwan compatriots take part in the cause of national reunification, he warned external interventional forces against disregarding the patriotism of the Chinese nation, and the unbreakable will of the Chinese people.

"The vigorous historical trend of national reunification can be stopped by no one," said Chen Yu, a researcher at the Academy of Military Sciences affiliated to the People's Liberation Army.

Wei Fenghe's warning towards external interventions and Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party was appropriate and necessary, according to a senior official with the Alliance for the Reunification of China, a Taiwanese organization.

"The mainland and Taiwan discussing reunification as equals is the right way to address the Taiwan issue, the common expectation of compatriots on both sides of the Strait, as well as what the international community would love to see," the official said.
