KUNMING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Two people died after they were attacked by wild elephants Monday in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said.

A 46-year-old banana farmer surnamed Cai was attacked and killed by a group of wild Asian elephants near his shed at around 2 a.m. Monday in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, said the prefectural government information office.

On the same day, Kuang, a 46-year-old farm worker from Mengla County, was found dead at the rubber plantation, with injuries caused by wild elephants trampling on his body. Further investigation is underway.

The local government has tightened surveillance of wild Asian elephants and warned local villagers to stay alert.

Wild Asian elephants are under Class A protection in China, with a population of about 300 mainly scattered in Yunnan. With strengthened protection efforts for environment and wildlife, the number of wild Asian elephants has been growing in recent years.
