Belt and Road Initiative evolves from Chinese proposal to global consensus

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- By advocating extensive consultation among relevant parties on equal footing, China has seen the Belt and Road Initiative evolve from a Chinese proposal to a global consensus, according to an official report released on Monday.

The report released by the Office of the Leading Group for Promoting the Belt and Road Initiative came ahead of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation to be held from April 25 to 27 in Beijing.

It said that the role of multilateral mechanisms has been strengthened through extensive consultation, as China actively engages in substantive coordination and cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative with other participating countries and fully utilizes existing multilateral cooperation mechanisms such as G20, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Asia-Europe Meeting, Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China-Arab States Cooperation Forum, and China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development and Cooperation Forum.

The country also established a track two mechanism for dialog, through which political parties, parliaments, think tanks, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, business communities, the media, and institutions of higher learning from China and other B&R countries can engage in diverse communication and make joint efforts to build the Belt and Road.

Calling the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing "a great success," the report said the forum has become an important platform for participating countries and international organizations to enhance mutual trust and enable more cooperation.

In addition, large-scale expositions, such as the China-ASEAN Expo, the China-Eurasia Expo, the China-Arab States Expo, the China-South Asia Expo, the China-Northeast Asia Expo, and the Western China International Fair, also helped boost consultation and cooperation between China and other B&R countries, it noted.
