Putin orders setting up of Russian national space center

(Xinhua)    10:28, February 28, 2019

MOSCOW, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday instructed the federal government, the state space corporation Roscosmos and the Moscow city government to establish a national space center.

The center will include the head offices of major rocket and space industry organizations, design bureaus and specialized units of research and educational organizations, said the instruction published on the Kremlin website.

In accordance with the document, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin are to present to Putin a report on the progress of the project by Jan. 15, 2020.

Putin said last week that he wanted a national space center as it is necessary to significantly increase the capabilities of Russian satellites to achieve a "revolution in communications, navigation and systems for remote sensing of the Earth."

"This is a good project to unite relevant organizations, design bureaus and prototype production facilities, and to support scientific research and the training of personnel," said Putin in his annual address to the parliament on Feb. 20.
