LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Regina King of romantic drama film "If Beale Street Could Talk" won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress on Sunday.
King defeated Amy Adams ("Vice"), Marina de Tavira ("Roma"), Emma Stone ("The Favorite") and Rachel Weisz ("The Favorite") in a fierce competition.
In "If Beale Street Could Talk," directed by Barry Jenkins, Regina King portrays Sharon Rivers, a steadfast matriarch devoted to her family and determined to support her pregnant daughter, whose fiancee has been wrongfully imprisoned.
The film nabbed three Oscar nominations, with the other two being Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score.
This is King's first Oscar nomination and win. King has already won a number of acting awards in this awards season, including the Golden Globe Award and Critics' Choice Movie Award.
"I'm an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone," said King in her acceptance speech.
The 91st Academy Awards, or the Oscars, are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor the best films of 2018 in 24 categories.
The ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, is the first one without a host in three decades. The last time the Oscars went host-less was in 1989.
