Chinese authorities are calling on the United States to abide by the one-China policy, while at the same time, carefully handle any Taiwan-related questions.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying has issued the warning after two American naval vessels passed through the Taiwan Strait earlier this week.
"China closely followed and had knowledge of the entire course of the U.S. warships passing through the Taiwan Strait. China has already expressed to the U.S. side that it is deeply concerned about what happened. The Taiwan issue is the most important and most sensitive issue for the China-U.S. relationship. We urge the U.S. side to abide by the One China Principle and the Three Communiqués, and carefully and appropriately manage the Taiwan issue in order to avoid damaging the China-U.S. relationship and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait," said Hua.
A Guided-missile destroyer and its companion vessel sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday.
US military officials have also released a statement, contending the manuever is "in accordance with international law."
