(People's Daily)    14:28, August 07, 2018

Indonesian national disaster agency said that the death toll had risen to at least 142 with more than 200 people injured. Thousands of houses and multiple buildings were damaged. The tremor also triggered power cuts on the island of Lombok and Gili Trawangan.

A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck Indonesian popular tourist island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province early Sunday evening. Indonesian authorities lifted a tsunami yellow warning two hours after it was issued.

Statistics from the US Geological Survey shows that the powerful earthquake centered in the northern part of Lombok, occurring 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) underground. Most of the people killed were from the northern and western regions of Lombok.

Around 200 Chinese tourists remain on Lombaok, and 37 of them, including eight from Hong Kong, have made contact with the Chinese Consulate General in Denpasar on Bali, the consulate said on Monday. It added that they are safe and some have already left Lombok by boat.

Three Gili Islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno, belong to Lombok, are well-known resorts like Bali on the west of Lombok. Scenic spots are concentrated in the western and central parts of the Lombok island, where people can enjoy the pristine beach and hike on the volcano.

Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the most geologically active region of Earth, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes. In December 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off Sumatra set off a tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives in a dozen countries.

It was the second quake to hit Lombok in a week. A magnitude 6.4 quake killed 16 people with 300 people injured on July 29. The Rinjani volcano, located in the northeastern part of Lombok, has had several landslides and is still closed.
