The Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee has released an article reviewing the CPC's handling of cross-Strait affairs over the last five years.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the situation in Taiwan and neighboring regions have undergone "complex changes," according to the article in the latest issue of the Qiushi Journal, the flagship magazine of the CPC Central Committee.

It argued that relevant work under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core had maintained stability across the Taiwan Strait, achieved major progress on cross-Strait ties, contributed to the development of the Party and nation, and advanced the cause of national reunification.

It said that over the past five years, Xi, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, had clearly set out the Party's work, position and principles on handling cross-Strait affairs.

The article reviewed major progress over the past five years, including the historic meeting between President Xi and the then Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou in 2015.

"The meeting pushed the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties and political interactions between the two sides to a new height," the article said.

However, it also noted profound changes in public opinion on the island in recent years, especially after the Democratic Progressive Party came to power again in May 2016. In response, the CPC Central Committee has taken a series of measures to safeguard the one-China principle, it said.

The article stressed that the CPC's policy toward Taiwan was clear and consistent, and the Party would resolutely contain any "Taiwan independence" secessionist activities.

"We will adhere to the 1992 Consensus as the political foundation, and continuously advance the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties," the article said, quoting comments by Xi.

Despite the impact of the "Taiwan independence" forces, it said, economic cooperation, cultural and social exchanges and grassroots communications between the two sides have made encouraging achievements.

The CPC adheres to the one-China principle in handling Taiwan's activities in the international community, firmly safeguarding the nation's core interests, it said.
