Beijing technology hub attracts more young talent

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Over 43 percent of workers in Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park, one of China's leading technology hubs, were under 29 years old as of the end of 2016, the park's administrative committee said Wednesday.

A total of 2.48 million people were working at the park in 2016, and over half held bachelor degrees or above. Some 26.5 percent, or 657,000 people, were skilled workers in the science and technology sector, it said.

More than 60 percent came from Chinese cities outside Beijing, and over 40,000 were either overseas graduates from the Chinese mainland or from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

China's science and technology talent pool is improving in both quality and quantity, and these young people will help extend innovation from limited sectors to comprehensive application across the whole country, according to venture capitalist and computer scientist Kai-fu Lee.

The Zhongguancun area offers preferential policies to entice foreign talent including providing permanent residence permits and visa-support services, as well as simplifying the approval workflow for starting businesses.
