LAGOS, Nigeria, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday handed over three newly constructed classrooms and educational materials at a cost of 20 million naira (56,000 U.S. dollars) to the southwest Nigeria's Lagos State government.

The classrooms, sponsored by the Consulate-General through the China-African People to People Friendship Action, was constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The construction of the classrooms, which are equipped with desk and benches, white board and fans for the comfort of students and teachers, started from June.

Guan Zhongqi, the Deputy Consul-General of Chinese Consulate in Lagos, handed over the building to the State Government at Iwora Ajido school premises in the Badagry area of the state.

The envoy said the gesture was to promote friendship between China and Nigeria and to boost education standard in Nigeria, adding that the project is an important part of China-Nigeria cooperation.

The Consul-General urged young Nigerians to study hard to know more about the world, including China.

Speaking to Xinhua on the sideline of the ceremony, Head of School, Madam Singerr, described the gesture as a wonderful intervention coming at a time the school was battling with shortage of classrooms for students.

She called for more collaborations from corporate bodies and organizations to boost teaching and learning in Nigerian educational institutions.

Traditional rulers, teachers, parents and local residents who attended the ceremony expressed unreserved appreciation for the laudable transformation that China implemented, adding that school and the pupils are forever grateful to the Chinese government and CCECC for the kind gesture.

Chinese companies under the sponsorship of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Lagos have carried out 11 projects on the platform of the China-African People to People Friendship Action, since 2013.

These projects, which has benefited more than 100,000 people in the Consular district, cover orphanages, schools, hospitals, among others.
