Sun Hao and Xu Haiyan were part of a group which had been exploring the underwater section of the Great Wall on September 6, 2017. The two failed to surface after their scheduled two-hour dive.
Both are said to have been experienced divers. They were part of a group called Global Underwater Explorers.
Authorities are still unclear as to the circumstances behind their drowning.
Panjiakou, located in Hebei Province, is a section of the Great Wall which became submerged after authorities created a dam along the Luan River in the early 1990's. It's since become a popular draw for tourists and amateur divers.
