Saudi accuses Iran of stalling probe into embassy attacks

(Xinhua)    17:29, August 01, 2017

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday accused Iran of stalling investigations into the attacks that targeted the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The attacks by Iranian protesters came in January 2016 after Saudi Arabia executed 47 terror convicts, including Saudi Shiite cleric Namer Al Namer. Saudi Arabia later cut diplomatic ties with Iran.

In response, Iran barred its nationals from performing Hajj last year, but allowed it this year, as the first group of Iranian pilgrims arrived here this week.

Iran also resorted to blackmail tactics to gain diplomatic privileges in the kingdom even after the diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed, according to a source at the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Despite an initial approval, Iran has denied a Saudi team access into Iran to assist in investigating the attacks, the source said on condition of anonymity.
