BEIJING, March 17 -- Revisions of China's government work report this year centered on environmental protection and people's livelihoods, according to a senior official Friday.

Based on the opinions of lawmakers and political advisors, 78 revisions were made to the government work report, said Han Wenxiu, member of the report's drafting team and deputy director of the State Council Research Office.

Among them, about 14 revisions were on environmental protection, over 20 focused on improving people's livelihood and nine were related to rural areas, farmers and agriculture, Han told a press conference.

In terms of improving ecological conditions, developing nuclear power in a safe and efficient way, taking focused action to curb pollution in key industries, improving fuel quality and strengthening air pollution analysis were new additions to the report.

For regulating the housing market, the report included revisions for building a better housing system that gives equal weight to buying and renting, and keeping home prices from rising too quickly in major cities.

The government work report, which outlines major achievements of 2016 and key tasks for this year, was delivered by Premier Li Keqiang at the opening of the Fifth Session of the 12th National People's Congress on March 5, and adopted on March 15, at the closing of the annual parliamentary session.

Lawmakers and political advisors attending the annual parliamentary sessions discussed the work report and offer their opinions.

Surprisingly, over 99 percent of lawmakers voted in favor of the report this year, even higher than that in 2016, defying the tradition of a lower pass rate when lawmakers are nearing the end of their five-year terms, according to Han.

Han said that the State Council would soon have meetings to assign tasks among government departments to make sure the report is implemented well.
