China chooses 13 charity websites

(Xinhua)    14:16, August 22, 2016

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- China has selected 13 websites to promote and fundraise for charity organizations, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday.

The websites, including www.gongyi.net under the Tencent Foundation, were picked from a list of 29 websites by a 20-member review committee composed of experts in charity, the internet, media organizations, as well as donors.

The finalists are open to objections from the public from August 22 to 28, said the ministry.

Online philanthropy has become popular in China, as many believe it offers more convenience and transparency compared to traditional methods of donation.

According to China's new Charity Law, which takes effect this September, online charity should work in accordance with websites approved by civil affairs authorities.
