Cousins wed without family's knowledge, marriage declared invalid

Chen and Luo are cousins who grew up together. The two always shared a close relationship, but neither set of parents ever noticed anything inappropriate between them. However, on May 20, 2014, Chen and Luo secretly registered for marriage. After the two families found out about their marriage, both sets of relatives came out strongly against the relationship.

Recently, the marriage between Chen and Luo came to an official end. Chen appealed to the court, asking them to nullify the marriage since his mother and Luo’s father are brother and sister.

According to Chinese law, couples who are directly related by blood, as well as those indirectly related within three generations, are forbidden to be married. The marriage between Chen and Luo clearly violated the law, so the court pronounced their marriage invalid.
