A tragedy recently occurred at an aquarium in Weihai, a city in eastern China’s Shandong province. A tourist fell into the walrus pool, and a walrus dived after him in pursuit. A breeder then jumped into the pool, trying to save the tourist; instead, the walrus also trapped the breeder underwater. Both the tourist and the breeder died.
According to aquarium employees, the breeder, surnamed Duan, saw that the tourist was about to drown, which is why he jumped in. Some other people working there tried to offer help using a pole. Unfortunately, despite those efforts, neither the breeder nor the tourist registered any signs of life by the time an ambulance had arrived.
The walrus in question weighs over 1,500 kilograms and is now over 10 years old. It is usually a very gentle animal, and it was quite close to Duan. People speculate that the walrus might only have wanted to “play” with the two victims, not realizing that to do so would kill them.
