Woman passes through customs with $160,000 taped to her waist

On May 19, the Public Security Frontier Defense Corps of Guangdong caught a woman attempting to carry foreign currency that far exceeded the legal limit from Hong Kong into Shenzhen. Around 8 a.m., a woman at the Sha Tau Kok border crossing attempted to enter Zhongying Street in Shenzhen. While she was passing through the inspection, a police officer noticed that the woman looked flustered and was walking hastily. When they inspected her, police found 16 piles of cash taped around the woman’s waist, totaling 160,000 undeclared dollars, equivalent to about 960,000 yuan.

China employs foreign exchange controls. According to national regulations, there is a limit for the amount of cash one is permitted to carry in or out of the state in one day. For RMB, the limit is 20,000 yuan. For foreign currency, the limit is $500 in one day, $1,000 in 15 days, or $5,000 for situations other than the two previously mentioned.
