IKEA has decided to recall a series of dressers that have been blamed for several fatal accidents, according to a statement on China's Quality Watchdog website on July 12.
According to the statement, the recall will start on Tuesday and will involve more than 1.67 million "Malm" dressers sold in Chinese mainland between 1999 and 2016.
The accidents that resulted from "Malm" dresser malfunctions occurred because the dressers had not been appropriately fixed to the wall. The defect has so far resulted in the deaths of six children in the U.S. and Canada, according to previous reports.
The company said in an official statement released on June 30 that customers who have misplaced their wall anchors should order a supplementary restraint kit free of charge at www.ikea.com/cn or contact IKEA toll-free at 400-800-2345. The restraint kit can also be collected at any IKEA store.
IKEA did not include China in the original product recall, a decision for which the company swiftly came under fire.
