After the unfortunate crash in 2010, Bethune road up to the Japanese whaling vessel on a jet ski, boarded the boat and handed the crew a $3 million bill to replace Earthrace.
Bethune was taken back to Japan where he was convicted on 5 charges, including disrupting the whaling program. He was incarcerated for five months before being released.
