Earthrace (pictured) was the brainchild of Captain Pete Bethune who linked up with LOMOcean, a naval architect, in 2004 to design the massive vessel powered completely by renewable fuel. In 2006, the massive ship hit the high seas in search of poachers and illegal hunting operations until it was destroyed in a boating accident four years later
This makes them especially suited to military and fisheries enforcement activities.
The design of the massive vessel should be finished by September, construction is expected to start in January 2017 and if all goes to plan, Earthracer 2 will be tackling wildlife crime 10 months later.
The original Earthrace ran on biodiesel made from waste cooking oils and hit a new world record in 2008 when the boat circled the globe in 60 days, 23 hours and 9 minutes.
'Governments have a role to legislate to make biofuels happen. If it were up to market forces, biofuels wouldn't happen at all,' Bethune said following the world record in 2008.
Earthrace 2 will be designed as a massive wavepiercer, with five state rooms. It can complete 28 day missions without being refueled, but will also include a Skysail Kit System for auxiliary power
