Abeysekera, 56, came to China for the first time in 1987. His visits to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, and Chengdu left him a very deep impression. In 1990, he came back again as a consultant of Sinhalese channel for a media company. With six years of working experience in China, Abeysekera made a lot of Chinese friends. Even though he left for Sri Lanka in 1997, China has always been his favorite. Therefore he decided to found the Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation Association to help bridge the communication between the two countries. Due to his special contribution, he was given the title "Goodwill Ambassador of China and Sri Lanka" in 2004.
