BEIJING, Sept. 9 -- China's top legislator Zhang Dejiang called on the country's lawmakers to stick to and improve the political system of people's congresses on Tuesday.
Zhang made the remarks at a meeting of the chairpersons of the 12th Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.
Zhang's comments echoed a speech made by President Xi Jinping last week to commemorate the NPC's 60th anniversary. Xi urged citizens "hold high the banner of people's democracy, while adhering to and improving the system of people's congresses as required by the times."
According to Zhang, Xi's speech is of profound importance in ensuring a more comprehensive, sufficient and intact people's democracy as well as pushing forward the modernization of the country's "governance system" and "governance capability."
"Resolutely uphold the trinity of the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), people's master status and the rule of law, and carefully fulfil the responsibilities granted by the constitution and the law," Zhang told those working in the NPC system.
According to a statement released after the meeting, the political system should serve as a means to ensure thorough and effective implementation of the CPC's various policies and decisions as well as the authority and unity of the Party and the country.
It urged legislative workers to exercise their power in legislation, supervision, decision-making and personnel arrangements in accordance with the law.
