8 Killed in Tamil Rebel Attack in Eastern Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels launched attack against government forces in the east of the country on Tuesday, killing 8 people and wounding 25 others, the Defense Ministry said.

It said that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels attacked an army camp in eastern Batticaloa district, killing six soldiers and wounding another 10. One Tamil rebel was killed in the fighting.

One civilian was also killed and 15 others, including five women, were wounded when they got caught in the crossfire, it added.

On Monday, the Special Task Force commandos destroyed a key base of LTTE rebels in the same area, killing 16 rebels, military officials said.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces in the north and east of the country since 1983 for an independent Tamil homeland. The bloody war has killed more than 60,000 people.
