One Tamil rebel was killed in the fighting. One civilian was also killed and 15 others, including five women, were wounded when they got caught in the crossfire, it added. On Monday, the Special Task Force commandos destroyed a key base of LTTE rebels in the same area, killing 16 rebels, military officials said. The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces in the north and east of the country since 1983 for an independent Tamil homeland. The bloody war has killed more than 60,000 people. |
