Megawati Skips State Functions, Chairs PDI-P Meeting

Indonesian Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri skipped state functions on Tuesday and chose to chair an internal meeting of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

The protocol bureau of the vice presidential secretariat stated that Megawati only had a single agenda for Tuesday -- chairing the PDI-P plenary meeting, the Antara News Agency reported.

Meanwhile, at the Presidential Palace, President Abdurrahman Wahid installed Marsilam Simanjuntak as the new minister of justice and human rights, replacing Baharuddin Lopa, who was installed on Tuesday as the new attorney general. Lopa replaced Marzuki Darusman.

Also installed on Tuesday were Rokhmin Dahuri, who replaced Sarwono Kusumaatmadja as minister of maritime affairs and fisheries and Budi Mulyawan Suyitno, who replaced Agum Gumelar as minister of transportation and telecommunication. Agum was installed as the new coordinating minister for political, social and security affairs last Saturday, replacing Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

PDI-P Deputy Chairman Kwik Kian Gie declined to comment on Megawati's absence in a number of state functions over the past few days that included the installment of Agum Gumelar as the new security coordinating minister and Comr. Gen. Chaeruddin Ismail as National Police deputy chief last Saturday as well as the Prophet Muhammad birthday celebrations at the Presidential Palace on Sunday.
