One Killed, 39 Injured in Sichuan Earthquake

A person was killed and 39 were injured in Sichuan Province as a result of the earthquake which hit areas between Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province and Ninglang in Yunnan Province, at 5:10 am Thursday, latest reports showed.

More than 38,000 Sichuan residents from 10 locations have suffered in some way from the quake, which measured 5.8 degrees on the Richter Scale, sources from Sichuan Office for Disaster Rescue revealed Friday.

Over 460 head of livestock were killed and large numbers of homes collapsed. Also damaged were 32 schools, five hospitals and many other infrastructure constructions and facilities due to quake, it was reported.

The epicenter of the quake was confirmed to be located in the Shekua Village in Yanyuan County, and the quake mainly jolted the Lugu Lake area, where aftershocks occurred twice, the Provincial Seismological Bureau reported.

Local government of Sichuan has offered 1 million yuan (120,000 U.S. dollars) fund for rescue work in the quake-stricken areas, and rescue teams concerning traffic, telecommunication, health care, material and other sectors have been sent to the help local residents.
