Six People Given Death for Theft, Murder in Shanghai

The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday imposed the death penalty on six persons involved in two separate cases of robbery, one of which ended in a murder.

In one case, three migrant workers - Su Zhiqiang, a 23-year-old Fujian native, Liu Zhang, 26, from Jiangsu Province, and Yi Qiang, 23, from Jiangxi Province - fed up with their tough manual work and poor salary, decided to make a fast buck.

Liu was a bodyguard for a Taiwanese businessman, identified only by his surname Zhang. The trio decided to rob the businessman and with this intent, disguised as workers from a tap water company to gain entry into Zhang's house on the morning of November 26, last year.

Using fake guns, they tied up Zhang, his wife, his daughter and the house-keeper, sealing their mouths with adhesive tape, before decamping with cash and jewelry worth 570,000 yuan (US$68,675).

In the other case, Jiang Yi, 22, and Jiang Fangxiong, 23, received the death penalty, and Jiang Wei, 22, got a two-year suspension of execution for surrendering to police.

The three friends used a dumbbell to hit their victim on the head and suffocated him to death with a plastic bag. All this because of Jiang Wei's desire for the victim's sedan, something he had always dreamed of owning. The unfortunate Gao Pin, a client of Jiang Wei's company - Shanghai Wenli Advertisement Co. - fell victim to the guiles of the three crazy former class-mates on October 14, when Jiang deceived him into coming to his office to discuss a business deal.

While talking, they killed Gao and robbed his necklace and palm notebook, worth 290,000 yuan, and took off in his sedan. They later drove to Zhejiang Province and set the body ablaze to remove all trace of evidence.
