Aid Rushed to Sichuan Quake Victims

The government of Sichuan Province, southwest China, is taking emergency steps to send food and clothing to the victims of the earthquake that struck the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Friday.

At least three people are reported dead so far.

The first batch of aid, including food, bedding, clothes, tents, medicine and medical facilities, will arrive in the tremor-hit area by Monday. A medical rescue team is already on the spot.

The quake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, has disrupted local transportation and communications, and the water and electricity supply systems. In addition, many houses have been damaged.

The local People's Liberation Army garrison has pledged its assistance.
