Northeast China Port City Sets Foreign Trade Record

Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning Province saw its foreign trade volume rising 46 percent to 10.2 billion US dollars in 2000, according to sources from the city's foreign trade committee.

The city's exports grew 71 percent to five billion US dollars last year, including some 4.1 billion US dollars generated by overseas-funded enterprises here, an increase of 36 percent on an annual basis.

Exports of machinery and electrical equipment and high-tech products, two major items among the city's top 10 export categories, totaled 2.58 billion US dollars and 780 million US dollars respectively last year.

Dalian's export business to Asia, European Union, United States, Russia, Australia and Africa has experienced rapid growth, following the city's swift strategic adjustment towards the changing world market, according to local economic experts.
