Scientific Exploration Team Sets off for Xinjiang

China has recently sent a scientific exploration team to the lower reaches of the Tarim River, the longest inland river in China, for scientific research purposes.

The expedition team will stay in Charkhlik County for 15 days to investigate the Lop Nur ruins and the areas containing water sources for wild camel and where cliff paintings were carved and search for traces of the existence of people who lived at Lop Nur.

The team is composed of meteorologists, environmentalists and hydraulic specialists from the China Scientific Exploration Association and China Fund of Science and Technology.

Lop Nur Wasteland is adjacent to Taklimakan Desert, China's largest movable desert where the ancient Loulan (Kroraina) Kingdom was located, Tarim River and Lop Nur Lake, which dried up in 1972 as a result of desertification and deterioration of the ecological environment.
