Agilent to Expand Operations in China

Agilent Laboratories, formerly part of hewlett-Packard Laboratories and one of the leading technological research centers in the world, has announced plans to launch a new research group, known as Agilent Labs, in Beijing, capital of the People¡¯s Republic of China, the latest edition of Beijing Review reports.

Agilent Labs-China will develop tools that will be used to design and model the next generation of optical communication devices, such as lasers, wave guides and modulators.

The decision was made in response to the Chinese Government¡¯s welcome to leading foreign companies to set up research centers in China.

Moreover, Agilent Labos-China will play a key role in the country¡¯s foreign economic cooperation, training of skilled workers, attraction of foreign investment and development of high-tech industry.

Agilent Labs-China will be located within the existing Agilent China Software Design Center. It will be staffed mainly by top local research scientists in the optics field.

The new group will operate under the direction of Agilent Labs Communications and Optics Research Laboratory (CORL), based in California, and will work closely with other CORL researchers in the United States.

Thomas Saponas, Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer of Agilent Technologies, and Director of Agilent Laboratories, said : ¡°The decision to locate the research group in China was influenced not only by Agilent¡¯s development plans, but most importantly by the fact that here there are first-class optical scientists and engineers, and we can secure the most talented people in the world here. The Chinese market is very important to Agilent, and we look forward to participating in its technological development. The establishment of Agilent Labs-China also demonstrates our long-term commitment to the Chinese market.¡±
