Hong Kong to Spend HK$200 Billion in Building Railways

Nicholas NG, secretary of Hong Kong Transport Bureau, told that HK SAR will build 12 railways at a cost of HK$200 billion in next 15 years and that a total of over 250 km of railways by then will be put at the service of Hong Kong.

According to HK's 1st Railway Development Plan mapped in 1994, NG said, fund raising has already been underway and six new railways will be built and launched respectively into operation during the years 2002-2005 in Hong Kong with an investment of HK$100 billion made.

Passengers will be doubled in number by 2016 according to an estimated population size of 9 million residing in Hong Kong. This naturally raises the demand for another six new railways to be built for a cost of HK$100 billion under the weighing load of a triple increase in the number of commuters and cross-border transportation between HK and China's mainland during the years 2008-2016.
