Tree Belts Being Built Along Major Rivers in Southwest China
Provinces in southwest China are combining their efforts to build tree belts along the Yangtze and Pear rivers.
The project will last 10 years and cost 120 billion yuan (14 billion U.S. dollars).
Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality will plant trees on 5.74 million ha of land along the Yangtze River, China's longest. Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi will build a green belt covering 3 million ha along the Pear River, the third longest in the country.
When the project is completed in 2010, the forest coverage rate on the upper reaches of the Yangtze and Pearl rivers will increase from 36 percent in 1999 to 47 percent. The project has proceeded smoothly over the past year.
