Three Gorges Residents Resettled in East China Province

The first group of over 800 Three Gorges residents arrived Sunday in Jin'an County, in east China's province of Jiangxi.

After a two-day journey by ship, the new comers, who had lived for many years in the city of Chongqing, in the Three Gorges Area on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, settled down in their new two-storey buildings.

Some 5,000 people are planned to arrive in Jiangxi in the next three years, of which 2,200 will be resettled in Jin'an , said a local official.

A dam is being built on the Three Gorges and it is scheduled to be completed by 2003. As a result, a total of 70,000 local residents have to be moved to other parts of China in seven years.
