Chinese Vice-President Meets Turkish Defense MinisterVice-President Hu Jintao said Sunday that China places great importance on developing friendship and cooperation with Turkey, and is willing to work with Turkey to further promote cooperation between the two countries and their armed forces in a variety of areas.Hu, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks in a meeting this afternoon with Turkish Defense Minister Sabahattin Cakmakoglu. He said that the peoples of the two countries have a time-honored friendship and bilateral relations have witnessed some new progress in recent years thanks to joint efforts. He added that Chinese President Jiang Zemin's successful visit to Turkey in April this year defined the direction for establishing and developing a trans-century and new cooperative partnership between the two countries. The joint crackdown on national separatism, international terrorism and religious extremism as well as organized transnational crimes is in the interests of the two countries and peoples, and will also be of importance to safeguarding tranquillity, stability and development in the region, the Chinese vice-president said. Cakmakoglu said that Sino-Turkish relations have been developing smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1971, and Turkey attaches great importance to promoting cooperation with China, adding that the growth of bilateral relations accords with the interests of both sides. He reiterated that the Turkish government will continue to pursue the one-China policy.
