Guangdong Takes Action to Protect Forest

Guangdong Province in south China started a five-month campaign Thursday to crack down on those who illegally destroy forest resources and encourage more people to become involved in forest protection.

The campaign is part of a nationwide move to protect the country's forest resources.

The forest coverage in Guangdong has increased from 27.7 percent to 56.8 percent over the past 15 years, and the province now has a total of 9.3 million hectares of forest.

The province has issued regulations on forest protection since mid 1980s, but cases of destruction of woodlands still happen in large numbers.

The campaign will help draw concern for forest resources from various social circles and consolidate the achievements of afforestation in past years, said an official with the provincial forestry bureau.
