East China Province Exports "Green" Food

East China's Shandong Province, a major grain producer, has been securing an increasingly larger share of the international "green" or organic food market.

Recent statistics show that the 25 enterprises engaged in the production of "green" food for export in the province sold 20 million US dollars of pollution-free food abroad in 1999.

The green-food industry took off only several years ago in Shandong, but has seen great progress in 16 of its 17 cities and prefectures.

The province has developed 53 varieties of "green" food, including grain, oil, fruit and vegetables, with an annual production capacity of 220,000 tons.

Shandong has adopted advanced international standards in the production of "green" food. A monitoring system has been established to ensure product quality.
