Birds Protected by Chinese Farmer and His Family

Thirty years ago, dozens of egrets came to nestle in the woods at Mt. Erlinggou where Yuan Deshan, a 72-year old farmer lives in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. There are now ten thousand egrets thanks to Yuan and his family.

The birds and the families live together in harmony. "My children and grandchildren grow up with birds chirping. We don't need an alarm clock as we get up and start a new day", Yuan said.

Yuan Xiaoyu, Yuan's three year old granddaughter has learnt quite a lot about egrets and other birds and often plays guide to passing visitors and family relatives.

The family's love on birds has instilled the importance protecting egrets among the local residents.
