Three Wildcats Born in Shanghai ZooThe sole pair of wildcats in Shanghai recently became parents of three newborn cubs, two male and one female. The Shanghai Zoo's days-old cubs weigh 2,500 grams each and their stripes are clearly visible. Wildcats live in areas of forest and grassland ranging from the southern United States to northern Argentina in South America. The cats are known for their fierce and independent character. In 1992, a male and a female wildcat were sent to the Shanghai Zoo from the Netherlands, but they fought frequently and did not reproduce. Zoo keepers had to put them in separate but adjoining cages. After three years of watching each other, they warmed up enough to mate, zoo sources said.
