Cultural Festival at Wall

To attract more tourists, artists from China and foreign countries will put on performances at the foot of the Great Wall beginning next week.

Sponsored by China's Great Wall Society and the local government, the First Beijing Badaling Great Wall International Culture and Art Festival will be held July 16-August 16.

During the festival, artists from Russia, Japan and Kazakstan will display their countries' traditional songs and dances while Chinese artists perform a concert of ancient chime stones and other epic songs and dances.

Managers and experts from the Royal Palace in India, the pyramids in Egypt, the Potala Palace in Lahsa and terra-cotta horses and warriors in Xi'an will gather for a seminar concerning the protection of the world's cultural heritage.

In addition, members from foreign embassies, commercial firms and diplomatic societies in Beijing will take part in a contest of climbing the Great Wall.

As a well-known sightseeing spot, the Badaling Great Wall has received about 120 million domestic and overseas tourists since 1979 when China adopted a policy of reform and opening up to the outside world.
