Writers Donate to Literary Foundation

Four well-known writers who won the first Lao She Literary Prize have donated money they earned from book sales to the Lao She Literary and Art Foundation, the foundation announced in Beijing on July 10.

The foundation granted the literary prize for the first time in June and published a compilation of all the winning short novels, written by Tie Ning, Liu Heng, Ye Guangqin, Lu Tao and Mu Guozheng.

Following the book's release, Tie, Liu, Ye and Lu endowed 12, 000 yuan (1,446 U.S. dollars) worth of remuneration of the first edition to the foundation.

The biennial Lao She Prize in Literature, set up to commemorate late Chinese literary master Lao She, who was former known as Shu Qingchun, is presented to eminent literary works which have "in- depth and meaningful text with a distinct local flavor," according to the judges' committee.

Lao She, a native of Beijing, created a number of masterpieces including the novel "Rickshaw Boy" and the play "Teahouse."
