Qinghai Province in northwest China and the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China have sped up the construction of highways.
Qinghai and Tibet will invest 2.85 billion yuan (343 million U. S. dollars) to build new highways and expand and improve the existing ones this year.
Statistics show that Qinghai had kicked off 22 highway projects by the end of May this year, 27.3 percent more than the same period of last year. Involved investment exceeded 1.9 billion yuan (228 million U.S. dollars), 140 percent the figure for 1999.
Tibet poured more than 700 million yuan (843,300 U.S. dollars) into highway construction in 1999.
