Community Education Blossomed in Shanghai Enriched Lives of the Aged

This high-school in Shanghai's Jing'an Temple Community has a new look among its student body. Husbands, wives and grandfathers can be seen going through these gates when the community college is holding classes. But going to school makes these older students feel much younger.

Dai Bangying, a community college student said: " After learning, I felt that I am no longer an aged woman. I feel like I am young again."

Since Jing'an community college was set up in 1997, it has enrolled some five thousand students. The courses are designed to cater to the needs of people's daily lives. Courses such as cooking, health care and English are the most popular ones.

For many, Jingan community college is an inexpensive way of getting training in practical subjects. For each course, the registration fee is just ten yuan, less than two US dollars. It recently opened another eighteen branches in the area.
