Anti-virus Regulation Welcomed

A new regulation on computer virus control released by the Ministry of Public Security has been welcomed by major anti-virus software companies.

Lu Zhendong, marketing director of Beijing Trend Company, which produced the powerful PC-cillin 2000 anti-virus software, told China Daily the regulation was necessary because the anti-virus software market needs authoritative administration.

The newly issued regulation stipulates that before people and companies which find computer viruses release the news to the public, they must submit the virus samples to institutions appointed by public security departments.

So far, Tianjin-based No 70 Quality Supervision and Inspection Station is the only such institution authorized by the Ministry of Public Security, according to Zhao Lin, an official of the ministry.

Zhang Shuangqiao, an official from the Tianjin-based station, claimed the regulation could curb the spread of computer viruses.

"As in the case of the "I Love You" bug, some companies may exaggerate the degree of the virus' harm to promote their anti-virus products," said Zhang.

On the other hand, Lu said, his worldwide company judges virus problems according to global trends.

Together with the regulation, a guideline on evaluating computer virus prevention products was also welcomed by Lu, who claimed the three-tier rating system of the guideline will be effective with anti-virus products.

According to Zhang, the 10 major nationwide anti-virus software producers have all been informed about the regulation.

But during China Daily's interviews, many anti-virus software producers said they knew of the regulation but never read it.

"It seems necessary, but I know nothing about it," an employee from the Computer Associate Company said. (China Daily)
