The new Guangzhou University, the combination of seven former institutes of higher learning, will open next month.
The new university is the synthesis of Guangzhou Teachers' College, South China Construction College (West College), existing Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Advanced Normal Training School, Guangzhou Educational College, Telecommunications and Textile Colleges of Guangzhou Urban Construction Workers' University. The reorganization plan was approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education in April.
Chen Chuanyu, vice mayor of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, said that the new university will focus on undergraduate education, but will also offer courses in vocational training and in graduate studies. It will also intensify and reform advanced education of teaching personnel.
Guangzhou University will have 20,000 full-time students and 1, 191 teachers. It currently covers 76.5 hectares, and eventually will acquire another 46.7 hectares of land and add new teaching equipment.
